A simple model for viscoelastic crack propagation

چکیده
Abstract When a crack propagates in viscoelastic solid, energy dissipation can occur very far from the tip where stress field may be different $$r^{-1/2}$$ r - 1 / 2 singular form expected close to tip. Most theories of propagation focus on near region. Remarkable, here I show that simple theory which does not account for nature region results semiquantitative agreement with based consider both opening and closing solids, some processes must process zone. The is illustrated by new experimental adhesive interaction between silica glass ball silicone rubber surface. Graphic abstract

Crack propagation in viscoelastic solids.
We study crack propagation in a viscoelastic solid. Using simple arguments, we derive equations for the velocity dependence of the crack-tip radius, a (v) , and for the energy per unit area to propagate the crack, G (v) . For a viscoelastic modulus E (omega) which increases as omega(1-s) (0< s< 1) in the transition region between the rubbery region and the glassy region, we find that a (v) appr...
متن کاملIrregular lattice model for quasistatic crack propagation
An irregular lattice model is proposed for simulating quasistatic fracture in softening materials. Lattice elements are defined on the edges of a Delaunay tessellation of the medium. The dual sVoronoid tessellation is used to scale the elemental stiffness terms in a manner that renders the lattice elastically homogeneous. This property enables the accurate modeling of heterogeneity, as demonstr...
متن کاملOn the inviscid limit of a model for crack propagation∗
We study the evolution of a single crack in an elastic body and assume that the crack path is known in advance. The motion of the crack tip is modeled as a rate-independent process on the basis of Griffith’s local energy release rate criterion. According to this criterion, the system may stay in a local minimum before it performs a jump. The goal of this paper is to prove existence of such an e...
متن کاملMesh refitting approach: a simple method to model mixed-mode crack propagation in nonlinear elastic solids
We devise a finite element methodology to trace quasi-static through-thickness crack paths in nonlinear elastic solids. The main feature of the proposed method is that it can be directly implemented into existing large scale finite element solvers with minimal effort. The mesh topology modifications that are essential in propagating a crack through the finite element mesh are accomplished by ut...
متن کاملPropagation of a Mode-II crack in a viscoelastic medium with different bulk and shear relaxation
A solution for a crack propagating under shear loading in an isotropic viscoelastic medium with different relaxation under volume and shear deformations is presented. The medium is infinite and the semi-infinite crack propagates along the x1-axis at constant speed V , which may take any value up to the speed of dilatational waves. The requisite Riemann-Hilbert problem for the steady-state case ...
